The best time to view the sea of clouds is early morning and dusk. From November to April of the following year, it is easy to see the sea of clouds due to the influence of the northeast monsoon.
Ideal Weather: Clear skies above, humid or misty conditions below – often after rain

Located in Xiding, about halfway up the road to Alishan from Chiayi, the Eryanping Trail offers one of the best places to catch a sea of clouds and sunset. The trail is short and easy, with a paved path leading to a ridge that overlooks the surrounding mountains.
What makes Eryanping special is the way it combines natural beauty with sunset and sea of clouds. It’s an ideal stop if you’re driving to Alishan from Chiayi or Fenqihu.

Xiaoliyuanshan Lookout (Ogasawara Mountain Observation Deck)
This hidden gem, also known as Ogasawara Mountain Observation Deck, is a lesser-known but stunning spot for panoramic views of Alishan’s peaks and the Central Mountain Range. Located just a short hike from Alishan House or Ciyun Temple, this viewpoint offers a peaceful alternative to the more crowded sunrise spots.
It’s an excellent place to catch sunrise, but some travelers also enjoy sunset here for its tranquility and sweeping horizon. The short trail up is scenic and quiet, passing through dense forest before opening to a wide viewpoint. Taiping Suspension Bridge
Though located outside the Alishan park area, the Taiping Suspension Bridge (Cloud Ladder) in Meishan Township is one of the most iconic skywalks in Taiwan. Stretching 281 meters across a high ridge, the bridge offers dramatic views of cloud seas, terraced tea fields, and the surrounding valleys.
Visit in the early morning for the best chance of seeing clouds blanketing the hills below, especially in autumn and winter. The nearby Taiping Old Street also makes a great post-bridge stop for local snacks and tea. It’s a great side trip if you’re staying in Meishan or coming from Chiayi.
Zhushan Sunrise Platform
This is Alishan’s most famous spot for sunrise—and for good reason. Easily reached via the Zhushan Line forest train, the viewing platform overlooks the Yushan (Jade Mountain) range and is perfectly positioned to catch the sun rising above a sea of clouds and distant peaks.
Be sure to arrive early, as it’s the most popular sunrise point and can get crowded during holidays or cherry blossom season. The experience of riding a small train in darkness and watching the world light up at the top of a mountain is one of Alishan’s most memorable experiences. If you’re lucky, you may also witness the famous “sunray halo” effect known as the “Alishan sacred light.”
Xianglin Observation Deck
Just a short walk from Shouzhen Temple in the Alishan Forest Recreation Area, Xianglin Observation Deck offers a quiet and easily accessible viewpoint with excellent visibility of nearby mountain ridges and forests. It’s perfect for travelers who prefer to avoid crowds but still want a scenic overlook.
The area is peaceful and surrounded by forest, making it a relaxing place to take in Alishan’s natural beauty at sunrise or sunset. While the view isn’t as expansive as Zhushan, it offers a much calmer atmosphere and is often overlooked by large tour groups. It’s a great spot to combine with a temple visit or forest trail walk.
Ciyun Temple Observation Deck
Located beside Ciyun Temple, this observation platform offers a peaceful spot with beautiful views of the surrounding hills, especially during early morning or late afternoon. It’s a short walk from Alishan House and one of the lesser-visited viewpoints, ideal for moments of quiet reflection.

If you don’t have time to go to the Eryanping Trail in Xiding, you can go to the Xiaoliyuanshan Lookout (Ogasawara Mountain Observation Deck) to watch the sunrise and the sea of clouds. If you are lucky enough, your wish to see the sea of clouds and the sunrise will come true at the same time in Alishan Zhushan.

According to the statistics of rainfall days in Alishan, the best tourist season in Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is from October to March of the following year. Due to the influence of the northeast monsoon, it is easier to see sea of clouds and cloud waterfalls during this period.
The Alishan area is surrounded by mountains, with a cool climate, high humidity and abundant rainfall. The rainy season is from April to September, and the dry season is from October to March of the following year. In addition, dense fog occurs from time to time, so you need to be extra careful when traveling.

Bonus Tip
The temperature on the mountain is relatively low in the early morning, so please prepare warm clothes.
Even in summer, early mornings (especially if you’re catching the sunrise at Zhushan) can be below 10°C (50°F). So always pack layers, no matter the season.
