DalongDong Baoan Temple

About  Dalongdong Baoan Temple

Dalongdong Baoan Temple traces its origins back to 1804, when immigrants from Tong’an, Fujian Province settled in what is now Taipei’s Datong District. Seeking to preserve their cultural and spiritual traditions, they built a temple dedicated to Baosheng Dadi (保生大帝) — the Taoist deity of medicine and healing.

Over the centuries, the temple became a center of not just religious worship, but also community life. It has undergone several renovations and expansions, especially during the Japanese colonial era, yet it has retained its original layout and design elements, thanks to careful preservation efforts.

From its intricately carved wooden beams to the vibrant dragon-adorned roofs, Baoan Temple is a masterpiece of traditional Taiwanese craftsmanship. It’s not only a place of worship but also a cultural hub, hosting lively festivals and traditional performances, especially during the temple’s birthday celebrations in spring.

In recognition of its architectural beauty and cultural significance, UNESCO awarded Baoan Temple the Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2003 for excellence in cultural heritage conservation. Today, it stands as one of the finest examples of traditional Taiwanese temple architecture, with intricate carvings, detailed woodwork, and vibrant temple art that tell stories from Chinese mythology and history.

More than 200 years later, Baoan Temple remains a living, breathing space — where ancient rituals meet modern appreciation, and where visitors can connect with Taiwan’s deep spiritual roots.

Tip: Combine your visit with the nearby Taipei Confucius Temple for a peaceful and culture-rich afternoon.

Dress Code?

Eating upon entering a temple is not permitted. You can enter most Taiwanese temples if you are wearing a vest, shorts, skirt, sandals, sunglasses, etc. There is no special dress code for visiting temples in Taiwan. Just wear normal clothes. The Best Time to Visit

While Dalongdong Baoan Temple is open year-round and welcomes visitors daily, the best time to experience its full cultural charm is during one of its vibrant festivals — especially the Baosheng Cultural Festival, held annually in spring (April–May). This festival celebrates the birthday of Baosheng Dadi, the temple’s patron deity, with colorful parades, lion dances, traditional performances, and Taoist rituals that bring the temple to life.

If you prefer a quieter visit, early mornings on weekdays offer a peaceful atmosphere perfect for appreciating the intricate architecture and observing local worshippers in their daily routines. The temple is beautifully lit at night too, providing a more serene and almost mystical experience.
